8 month update
Aloha!
It’s hard to believe it’s been almost 8 months since our son arrived, but incredibly, impossibly - it has. Though we’ve been steadily posting videos of Kai to youtube, we haven’t updated the blog since the birth. An update is clearly in order.
Kai is growing like a weed. He’s strong, healthy, and somehow eats the equivalent of his body weight daily. He must need the energy to support his ever enlarging cranium. At 20 lbs, he is now approaching the ‘normal’ growth curve for kids his age. Despite this, whenever someone asks us how old he is and we respond, the inevitable response is “whoa, big boy!” The video that we took of Kai eating his first solid foods was an instant classic. A little over a month ago, Kai realized that his beefy thighs were good for more than just sitting on, and he began to scotch across the carpet. This behavior was encouraged by placing an iphone about a meter away. It should be noted here that Kai has a serious infatuation with the iphone and he will go to unnatural lengths to pursue, obtain and chew on his dad’s phone. He’s now advanced to a full-scale crawl, which as all parents know, is a game-changer. The living room has become a sort of arena, as whole shelves of DVDs, photo albums, toys, picture frames and remote controls suffer the ravages of our mobile, agile and hostile son. He is just starting to pull up, sparking pure panic on the part of his parents.
As for Kai’s parents, Daniela is now working in the Community Services Division of the City & County of Honolulu, where she administers a federal grant funding programs to curb teenage substance abuse. Despite the bureaucracy, she’s enjoying putting her degree to work and is excited about the upcoming phase of the project, in which she will be helping communities, schools, and local organizations apply for funds from her grant. Jack has set a graduate date for Summer 2010, meaning he will defend his dissertation in May 2010. This time table for graduation makes him eligible to apply for several job openings that start in Fall 2010. These include post-doctoral research positions, faculty positions, and fellowships. Jack’s going to try and retain his sanity has he applies for jobs, finishes his dissertation, and tries to publish articles on his research through the spring months. Hopefully there will be some job interviews sprinkled in there too. We’re excited to spend our first Christmas holiday season in Hawaii this winter. The entire Spoto clan is flying in from California and Scotland to spend it with us in idyllic Pauoa valley.
